Twinning between Château-Thierry and Pössneck has been official since 1992, but actually the co-operation between the two cities is much older. It was initially prompted in 1964 by ex-servicemen and prisoners of war.
The first charter, Charter of Friendship, was signed in 1964 and " promised to develop human relations between the inhabitants of the two cities " . However and because of the policy of the time in the East German Republic, the exchanges until 1989 could only take place from west to east, from France towards the GDR.
It is only after the Reunification of Germany that the relations could progress to a real partnership. A new charter was signed in December 1989, aiming at developing a tripartite partnership between Château-Thierry - Pössneck - Mosbach (West German city already twinned with Château-Thierry since 1974).
From 1990/91, with the formation of the Association, the exchanges now extend to all fields: cultural, educational, socio-economic, sporting, touristic.

The small town of approximately 15000 inhabitants surrounded by vineyards on the two banks of the River Marne, Chateau-Thierry is located at the centre of Omois, meeting point of three historical areas: Champagne, Picardie and Valois.
The archaeological discoveries determine the origin of the area to be Gallo-Romanic, when many villas would then have been situated on right hill-side above the Marne.
It had in the past, owing to its geographical situation, served as a fortified military town and at the time of its fabulist Jean de La Fontaine, as a trading centre, was a regional pole for exchange and communication.
Today attached to the administrative area of Picardie, it still cultivates its Champagne tradition with the vine culture and the production of Champagne.

Pössneck is a small town in Thuringia of approximately 14000 inhabitants. It is situated on the the Kotschau river in the Orla depression, and is surrounded by a patchwork of meadows and forests.
Its foundation probably goes back to the 6th or 7th century when the Sorbs, West-Slavic tribe, established a colony there.
In the pre-industrial time, the tanneries which bordered on the Kotschau, also known as Gerberbach (Tanners'brook), seemed to have played an essential economic role.
But the most significant period of its development was in the 2nd part of the 19th century with the settlement of leather and textile industries (no longer existent), and also the development of food industry (Chocolate factory) and an important printing works, both of them being still productive.
